Inspired by Germany's #DiDay ("digital independence day") and the Danish #DanmarkSkifter, the Netherlands now has #DoeiDag ("bye day"), every first Sunday of the month. 🔥🇳🇱
DoeiDag is a montly day to say goodbye to big tech and to try open alternatives. It's organized by the good folks of @doeidag

A baby starts wailing on the train. This woman pulls out her phone, silences the alarm, and takes the pill.
I’m screaming. 😂
Web eco-design
Best practice guidelines
Our digital uses already represent 40% of our annual sustainable budget, both in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the depletion of the last reserves of non-renewable resources (abiotic resources). That's 10 times too much!
Eco-designing digital services allows us to better control and limit their environmental and health impacts...

New #Blogpost!
I prefer to read (and to write) an unpolished, human website.
This post is unpolished, says nothing new, doesn't take into account every angle, and it's even kinda rushed, but it's mine, so anyway.

For many people, the #Linux vs #Windows vs #Mac debate is a privilege — it assumes you can choose. But working with the Computer Upcycle Project, I've seen the real choice is often Linux vs no computer at all.
~95% of donated computers are "too old" for Windows 11 or macOS. Linux installs on them anyway, adding 10+ years of life to machines #Microsoft and #Apple called trash.
This isn't Linux vs Windows. It's Linux vs e-waste.

Han: a compiled programming language with Korean keywords written in Hangul
Since many of the platforms and conventions that came to dominate computing came from the western world, we never give it a second thought that virtually everything related to programming is written in English using the English alphabet. However, there's no real reason behind
We're all walking contradictions, and that's okay.
I champion Free Software, self-host everything, and preach digital sovereignty... and I carry an #iPhone in my pocket 🤷♀️ No shame.
(Still no Windows though. Some lines you just don't cross. 😅)
Your values don't have to be a perfect system. They just have to be yours.

An old M28 series locomotive, first produced in 1955 by the Hungarian Wagon and Machine Works in Győr. Mostly they serviced industrial railways, moving loads and freight.
This one worked at a now abandoned thermal power plant in Hungary. Now it sits silent and forgotten inside an old rail shed.

All my clients wanted a carousel, now it's an AI chatbot!
It always starts the same way. The client pulls out their phone mid-meeting, navigates to a competitor's website, and holds the screen up like evidence.
"You see? They have one of those."
A little bubble. Bottom right corner. Blinking...

Building your first smolweb page
A simple news article that takes ten seconds to load and eats 50 MB of data. You've seen that. We all have. Mountains of JavaScript, giant CSS frameworks, third-party trackers, custom fonts pulled from remote servers... all of that to display a few paragraphs of text.
The smolweb pushes back against that...

Do you know of any movement promoting minimal, utilitarian writing, stripping everything down to what the recipient actually needs?
Asking because I see many people writing a rough draft, asking an AI to polish it, bloat it, and the recipient uses another AI to summarize it. Two humans, zero actual communication.
There's #plainlanguage and #Crocker 's Rules, but nothing focused specifically on cutting the fluff from everyday writing.
Could #smolwrite (or another name) be a thing?
