I love the Fediverse. I have been on it for years, and it remains the only social network where I actually enjoy spending time. No algorithmic feed pushing outrage, no dark patterns, no surveillance capitalism. Just people talking to each other over an open protocol.
But every time I wanted to recommend it to someone, I ran into the same wall: the clients are heavy. Mastodon's web interface ships megabytes of JavaScript. Elk, Phanpy, Ivory, beautiful apps, but they require a modern browser, a fast connection, and a device manufactured in the last five years ...

#iOS 27 upgrade in progress... 📱🍏
Oh Scheiße!
Generally, at the end of the day, I don't have more than a dozen of open tabs in my web browser. Otherwise, I'm rapidly lost and waste too much time to lookup the good one
### What's up on the small web? August 2026 roundup
Summer rolls on, and the small web had a busy month: a major Lagrange release, a new graphical client for Android and desktop, terminal tools crossing v2.0, and some good community debates. Here is a roundup of what happened on the small web, the smolnet, and around the Gemini protocol in August 2026....

If you don't want to deal with any AI generated content or code, you have to switch off your computer and smartphone now.
Alternative is to install insecure versions (pre 2021) of an operating system (such as Debian 11, Ubuntu 20.04) and its original software and never upgrade them.
It is sad, but it is the reality.
What is the best choice for #Debian
- refuse AI generated code but include some anyway from dev hiding they use AI
Or - accept AI generated code with pragmatism considering the commiter as responsible for the pushed code
Not sure these options are so different
geminiprotocol.net domain name has expired, the registrar, namecheap, invites the owner to renew it.
I hope it will be renewed by the original owner.

What's up on the #smolweb? July 2026 roundup
New blog post !
July 2026 was a quietly busy month on the smolweb. The #Geminispace keeps growing toward 3,500 active capsules. A Gemini browser landed on a handheld game console. The Old Computer Challenge brought the #permacomputing and #smolnet communities together. Protocol design debates (SMTP vs #Gemini extensibility, TOFU improvements) show the community is still thinking critically about its own foundations. And the #gopher scene, far from dead, continues to produce practical content and welcome new operators...

The perfect equipment set
People often ask me what I actually use, day to day, to do the things I write about here. The honest answer is: not much. Four devices, a couple of cables, and a strong opinion about each one. This is that list, and why each item earns its place.
I am not interested in the "latest and greatest". I am interested in a set that fits together, lasts, and does not quietly send my life to three different data brokers. So here it is, my perfect equipment set.

If you’re looking for inspiring content to help you break free from materialism, I recommend The Minimalists’ website. There you’ll find podcasts, books, e-books and a full-length documentary.
It’s a far cry from the more radical #lowtech movement, but it could be a crucial step if you’re deeply trapped in materialism and suffer from compulsive shopping.
#theminimalists is the tag to follow on social networks
I love #lighttpd !
This web server is very lightweight and always do the job.

The anonymous publishing platform has a very low activity (about 2 posts per week).
So, there is no interest to maintain such a service.
I’m sorry for this.
I recommend the few authors needing a publishing space to use https://pages.casa or https://pollux.casa

If you need to teach #smolweb to your AI tools such as #claude or #mistral #vibe I share a Smolweb skill definition you can install directly.
I know that many smolweb enthusiasts refuse to use this sort of tool, but if it helps to ensure there are more smolweb sites, I think it’s a good idea to share this.
No time to code these days, the #garden is my priority !
PHP[tek] 2026 starts tomorrow in Chicago, and I won't be there.
Not because the schedule doesn't look interesting. A few talks would have caught my attention: event-driven architecture for resilient PHP apps, advanced SQL features most of us quietly ignore, semantic search and embeddings, or the NativePHP track. Even the advanced PHPUnit session sounds like the kind of deep dive I rarely make time for.
But flying thousands of kilometers for a three-day conference just doesn't fit with how I try to live. That's my call, not a criticism of anyone making the trip. Enjoy Chicago, enjoy the talks, enjoy the hallway conversations that often end up being the best part anyway... and share on the Fediverse ^^
Are there any plans to implement encryption for private messages using a public key attached to the Fediverse account?
I understand that the metadata would not be encrypted, but that would be more than sufficient for many use cases. The decentralised nature of the Fediverse is a major advantage in the fight against censorship.
