If you are going to tonight's 6pm protest in Boston at Park Street, bring friends and mask. Use airplane mode, turn off your phone or don't bring it to disable tracking. Bring a camera if you want to record it. MBTA stations and buses have cameras. Here is an incomplete map of surveillance cameras around Park Street. Get your own map at cctv.masspirates.org
@adele I was reading the page about e-mail on message.casa and your recommendation of POP3 to save server space and it got me thinking about IMAP vs POP3 after years considering POP3 as “that old thing nobody used anymore”.
Seems it was again convenience (sync all devices) and the feeling of falsely “unlimited” storage by Google and friends that trapped us again into yet another dependency.

If you care about stopping US imperialism, you should consider ditching as much US-based tech as possible. This post from @parismarx provides a lot of helpful alternatives and makes it easier to switch: https://disconnect.blog/getting-off-us-tech-a-guide/ #Imperialism #NoWar #BigTech
I have to repost it:

When people say: "billionaires shouldn't exist" that isn't a call to violence. "Being a billionaire" isn't some inherent property in the way that say, skin color is.
Wealth taxation is a perfectly acceptable way of eliminating all billionaires. That doesn't mean billionaires stop being people, they just stop being billionaires.
The EU will launch the digital euro as a 100% European digital payments system to replace reliance on Visa, Mastercard, and Apple and Google Pay, with the European Central Bank issuing a digital form of cash. It will be built entirely in Europe, have zero transaction fees, instant payments, and strong privacy, giving the EU full control over its payments infrastructure.
We JUST hit €40,000!!! That is HUGE, thank you all SO much!
However, we are still only halfway to our goal, so make sure to share, to support, and to let everyone know about .meow!
We will throw off the yoke of digital landlords, but we still need your help :3
And for now… champagne! Catnip! Celebrations!!
So, the first of the year is coming up quickly. As many of you know, I've been unemployed from full-time employment for quite a long time. I've been working part-time jobs to make ends meet but I need to do more. I've decided to start doing some consulting.
I want to start offering a few services:
1. Building websites for individuals, small businesses, or non-profits.
2. Helping individuals, small businesses, non-profits with certain Information Technology needs. Mainly, Linux, Open Source Software, and networking.
I'm really hoping that this turns into something more than just small consulting work. I would love to start doing this full-time. At nearly 59, I don't see myself ever getting full-time employment any other way.

After several decades using #Linux I can say that the best distributions, for me, are #Archlinux and #Debian
Arch when I need the last version of all the software I use, and Debian if I want a robust platform.
My both laptops and one server run Arch, other 4 machines use Debian (12 or 13)
When I'm not feeling very well, when I'm feeling down or blue, I put on my headphones and listen to The XX. Their music is like medicine for my soul.
Here's Sunset, from their album Coexist. (Listen with headphones so the bass can massage your brain cells.)
Highlights from last week:
- Fix caret never rendering following a newline
- Implement eviction in the HTTP cache using `quick_cache`
- Prescan byte stream to determine encoding before parsing document
- More progress on WebDriver and Web Crypto API

The latest comment from @adele about Firefox inspired me to write this phlog/log entry.
Firefox and the useless box.

I've been using #Firefox for over 20 years at this point, but after a stream of cock-ups, I'm thinking about moving on.
New #Mozilla CEO: “Blocking ad-blockers in #Firefox could bring in an additional $150M in revenue“.
Sure, even extracting and selling one of my kidneys could bring me a big revenue, but it doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea.
Firefox by now has less than 3% of the browsers’ market share, and the only folks who still use it regularly are exactly those who don’t want ads constantly shoved in their faces, nor trackers to suck up every valuable detail about them.
And they are willing to go the extra step and use a browser that is less supported than the overwhelmingly Chromium-based crowd out there.
Take ad blockers away (and, most importantly, take away Manifest V2 extensions), and those few remaining users will just dwindle away to Brave, Vivaldi, Chromium/Cromite/Vanadium, or to support Ladybird/Servo, before you even finish saying the words “profit margins”.
And of course their collective hallucination with AI has now crossed into the realms of ridicule. Nobody knows exactly what kind of new useful features will be added nor how those will solve problems that users want to solve. All we know is that “AI is coming”, embedded in a lot of low-value features that nobody asked, and that some product managers rushed to release just because someone at the top of the food chain asked to “put AI in their product”, and with literally zero chances of competing against the AI features provided by the browsers of companies like Google and Microsoft who can afford to invest into AI 3-4 orders of magnitude more resources than Mozilla.
I’m wondering why Mozilla seems so committed to this mission of firing dumb CEOs just to hire someone who is even dumber and detached from reality than their predecessor.
